Museum

For anyone with a love for art nouveau, culture, architecture and nature.

Museum pavilion

Collectors Jos and Janneke van Groeningen founded Museum De Buitenplaats in the early 1990s for their collection of figurative art.

Architectural firm Alberts & Van Huut - known for the Gasunie building in Groningen, among others - was commissioned to design a museum pavilion. This firm emphasises the human scale, integration between architecture and nature, and people's well-being. Architects Ton Alberts and Max van Huut regard their work as an extension of nature.

Queen Beatrix opened the museum in Eelde in 1996. The organic shapes bring the building and the collection of art from around 1900 together seamlessly.
