Maarten Robert and the Nijsinghhuis
- 16 June till 1 December 2024
- Drents Museum De Buitenplaats
An exhibition showcasing the personal work of woodcarver Maarten Robert (1950). In addition to his commissioned work as a restorer and framer, Robert creates his own sculptures. These range from metre-high figures and wooden constellations to smaller, finely detailed mouldings.
Whatever the scale or subject, the wood is always his primary focus. Throughout the creative process, Robert embraces the natural characteristics of each type of wood, allowing grains and knots to become integral elements of the finished piece.
Maarten Robert is no stranger to Eelde. As early as 1995, he crafted a carved window in the 17th-century Nijsinghhuis, a former town hall with murals by Northern Figuratives such as Matthijs Röling and Wout Muller. In the years that followed, he designed furniture there and left his mark on the orangery in the garden behind it with another carved window and sculptures. The exhibition Maarten Robert and the Nijsinghhuis shows seven wooden sculptures in the monumental rooms of the Nijsinghhuis. Three paintings by Röling are also on display, framed by impressive woodcarvings by Robert.
The Maarten Robert and the Nijsinghhuis is on view June 16th to December 1st 2024.
