Women of De Buitenplaats

  • 2 July till 29 October 2023
  • Drents Museum De Buitenplaats

In keeping with Match, Museum De Buitenplaats is turning its full attention to female artists. The exhibition Women of De Buitenplaats highlights key figures in the museum’s history, such as Olga Wiese (1944) and Clary Mastenbroek (1947), who both created murals in the Nijsinghhuis. This seventeenth-century national monument was then the home of Jos and Janneke van Groeningen, the founders of Museum De Buitenplaats.

Years of involvement

The figurative art tradition in the north has an idiosyncratic variant with the work of Olga Wiese. Her wondrous paintings have not only acquired a place in Groningen establishments and private collections, but also in various museums in the Netherlands. In 1994 Wiese began her project in the Nijsinghhuis, where she provided the bedroom with a mural. It was the start of a long-term relationship with the museum. With more than twenty of Wiese's works, most of which are being shown to the public for the first time, Women of De Buitenplaats once again puts the Groningen-based artist in the spotlight.

From the museum's own collection, work by Dorothé van Driel, Clary Mastenbroek, Tamara Muller and Trudy Kramer is presented. With over forty paintings, drawings, collages and glass sculptures, Women of De Buitenplaats sheds light on the varied working methods of these artists. During the exhibition, work by Lotta Blokker, Dorothé van Driel, Charlotte van Pallandt, Jet Schepp, Patricia Suer and Elizabeth Varga can be seen in the sculpture garden.
